STABILITY – The ABC’s of JuniorGym

S is for Stability

Strong movement begins with a stable foundation.

Stability is the ability to keep the body steady and controlled while standing, balancing or moving. It allows children to maintain control of their body, whether they’re balancing on a beam, climbing equipment or landing from a jump.

Many people think stability is simply about standing still, but it’s actually what allows children to move with confidence and control. Before children can master more advanced skills, they first need a stable body to build from.

That’s why stability is a key focus in Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs.

Why Stability Matters

Developing stability supports children both in movement and everyday life.

Builds core strength

A strong core provides the foundation for almost every movement children make, from climbing and jumping to sitting at a desk.

Supports healthy posture

Stability helps children maintain good posture while sitting, standing and moving, supporting both physical development and school readiness.

Improves body control

Children with good stability can control their movements more efficiently, making activities feel smoother and safer.

Prepares children for learning and sport

Stability supports writing readiness, balance, coordination and participation in a wide variety of sports and physical activities.

How We Build Stability in Junior Gym

In Junior Gym, stability is developed through purposeful movement challenges that strengthen the whole body.

Balance beams and stepping stones

Children learn to stabilise their body while moving across different surfaces.

Holding gymnastics shapes

Static positions strengthen the core and improve body awareness.

Slow, controlled movements

Activities encourage children to move with control rather than speed alone.

Climbing and safe landings

These activities challenge children to stabilise their body before, during and after movement.

Through these experiences, children develop the strength and control needed to move confidently, sit comfortably and participate successfully in everyday activities.
