FOCUS – The ABC’s of JuniorGym

F is for Focus

Focus is a key skill that helps children learn, participate and feel confident in group environments.

Focus is the ability to listen, concentrate and follow instructions. It allows children to stay engaged in activities, respond to guidance and complete tasks from start to finish.

In early childhood, focus is still developing. Young children are naturally curious and easily distracted, which is why they need opportunities to practise concentrating in a fun and supportive environment.

That’s where Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics play an important role — helping children build focus through movement, routine and engaging activities.

Why Focus Matters

Developing focus supports children both in movement and in everyday learning.

School readiness

Focus is essential for the classroom. Children need to listen to instructions, stay on task and participate in group activities.

Attention and concentration

Practicing focus helps children gradually increase how long they can stay engaged in an activity.

Following instructions

Understanding and responding to instructions helps children move safely and successfully through activities.

Learning and skill development

Focused children are better able to process information, practice skills and make progress over time.

How We Build Focus in Junior Gym

In Junior Gym, focus is developed through structured, engaging and age-appropriate activities.

Structured class routines
Predictable class formats help children understand what to expect, making it easier for them to stay engaged and participate.

Clear, simple instructions
Coaches use consistent language and cues, helping children listen, understand and respond with their body.

Skill progressions
Activities are broken down into manageable steps so children can concentrate on one part at a time and experience success.

Engaging movement activities
Fun and varied tasks keep children interested while encouraging them to stay involved and attentive.

Through these experiences, children learn how to listen, concentrate and follow through, building skills that support both movement and early learning.
