BALANCE – The ABC’s of JuniorGym
B – is for BALANCE
Balance is one of the most important building blocks of movement for young children.
In simple terms, balance is the ability to keep the body stable while standing, moving, or landing. It allows children to control their body position whether they are walking along a beam, jumping off equipment, climbing, or simply standing still.
In early childhood, balance is still developing. Children learn it through movement experiences that challenge their body to stabilise, adjust and control their position in space. That’s why activities like balancing, stepping and landing are such an important part of Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs.
Balance doesn’t just help children move safely — it supports coordination, posture, confidence and participation in many kids sports and physical activities.
Why Balance Matters
Developing strong balance skills helps children in many ways.
Posture and body control
Balance helps children develop the muscles that support good posture. This allows them to sit upright, move with control and maintain stable body positions during activities.
Stability and coordination
When children improve their balance, their movements become smoother and more controlled. This supports coordination and makes it easier to run, jump, climb and play.
Injury prevention
Learning how to stabilise the body helps children land safely and recover from small stumbles. These skills are important both in gymnastics and in everyday play.
Confidence in movement
When children feel stable and in control of their body, they become more confident exploring new movements and challenges.
How We Build Balance in Junior Gym
In Junior Gym, balance is developed through fun, purposeful activities that challenge children in safe and supportive ways.
Some of the ways we help children develop balance include:
Beam walking
Walking along low beams helps children practise steady steps while maintaining control of their body.
Stepping stones and balance paths
These activities encourage children to shift their weight, adjust their footing and move carefully through space.
Balance boards
Small changes in surface stability help children learn how to activate their core muscles and stabilise their body.
Controlled landings
Jumping and practising safe landings helps children develop stability while absorbing impact and maintaining control.
Through these activities, children learn how to stabilise their body, control movement and move confidently through different environments.
Over time, these skills support not only gymnastics, but also other kids sports, playground play and everyday movement.
