AWARENESS – ABC’s of JuniorGym
Learning Through Movement
In the first five years of life, movement plays a critical role in brain development, coordination, emotional regulation and school readiness.
For young children, how they move is closely linked to how they learn, focus and interact with the world around them.
That’s why Junior Gym is more than active play. It’s a structured movement program designed to build strong bodies, confident minds and capable learners.
Every class supports:
- Strength, balance and coordination
- Focus and learning readiness
- Fine motor and pre-writing skills
- Confidence and resilience
- Social skills and teamwork
- Fundamental movement skills for all sports
To help families understand exactly how this works, we’re launching The ABCs of Junior Gym — a series exploring the key developmental benefits children gain through our JuniorGym program.
We’re starting with one of the most important foundations.
A – is for AWARENESS
Because when children move with purpose, they learn with confidence.
What Is Body Awareness?
Awareness is the ability to understand where your body is in space and how it moves.
In JuniorGym and preschool gymnastics classes, awareness is one of the first and most important foundations children develop. Before children can balance on a beam, swing on bars or learn more complex gymnastics skills, they first need to understand how to control their body.
For young children, this awareness develops through movement-based learning.
Activities such as crawling, balancing, rolling, jumping and climbing help children build the brain–body connections needed for coordination, confidence and safe movement.
This is one reason gymnastics for kids is often called the foundation sport. It teaches children how to control their body, move safely and develop coordination — skills that support success in almost every other sport.
Why Awareness Matters
Strong body awareness helps children to:
- Pause and listen with control
Children who can stop and hold their body are better able to listen to instructions and focus during activities — a key skill for both kids sports and school readiness. - Move smoothly between activities
Awareness helps children transition calmly from one task to another. This might be moving through a gymnastics circuit or shifting between classroom activities. - Control their body in busy environments
In group environments like gymnastics classes, preschool settings, playgrounds and sports teams, children need to understand where their body is and how to move safely around others. - Wait safely for their turn
Balancing, holding shapes, sitting still and controlling movement all require body awareness. These skills support participation in structured activities like preschool gymnastics and other kids sports programs.
How We Build Awareness in Junior Gym
At Skylark Sports, our Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs in Mount Waverley and Lynbrook are designed to build body awareness through purposeful movement.
Rather than simply letting children run and play, our coaches guide children through activities that develop coordination, balance and control in a fun and supportive environment.
We build awareness through several key approaches.
- Structured movement tasks
Activities such as balancing on beams, rolling down wedges, jumping and landing safely, and climbing over obstacles help children learn how to organise and control their bodies. - Clear and consistent coaching cues
Our coaches use simple language and consistent instructions so children learn to recognise movement patterns and respond with confidence. - Repeated practice
Children learn through repetition. Regular practice strengthens the brain–body connection and builds coordination. - Carefully layered skill development
Skills are introduced gradually, allowing children to progress from simple movements to more complex gymnastics activities as their awareness and confidence grow.
These experiences are what make Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics such powerful starting points for kids sports.
Children who develop strong body awareness early are often more confident, more coordinated and more prepared to explore movement, whether that’s continuing in gymnastics for kids, joining other sports, or simply enjoying active play.
When children understand their body, they move with confidence.
And confident movers become confident learners — in sport, in school and in life.
