INDEPENDENCE – The ABC’s of JuniorGym
I is for Independence
Independence is an important part of helping children grow into confident and capable learners.
Independence is the confidence to try skills and move without constant assistance. It allows children to make their own choices, attempt challenges and begin to trust their own abilities.
In early childhood, independence develops gradually. Children need opportunities to try things for themselves in a safe and supportive environment, where they feel encouraged rather than directed.
That’s why independence is an important focus in Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs — helping children build confidence through movement and experience.
Why a Independence Matters
Developing independence supports children both in movement and everyday life.
Builds resilience
When children try things for themselves, they learn to manage challenges and keep going, even when something feels difficult.
Develops self-belief
Each successful attempt helps children build confidence in their own abilities and feel proud of what they can do.
Encourages decision-making
Independence allows children to make choices about how they move and approach activities, supporting problem-solving skills.
Prepares children for new environments
Being able to participate without constant support helps children transition into settings like school, sports and group activities.
How We Build Independence in Junior Gym
In Junior Gym, independence is encouraged in a way that feels safe, supported and achievable for every child.
Completing circuits independently
Children are guided to move through obstacle courses and activities on their own, building confidence in navigating tasks.
Encouraging “have-a-go” attempts
Children are supported to try skills before asking for help, helping them build trust in their own abilities.
Opportunities for choice
Activities allow children to make small decisions about how they move, supporting confidence and ownership.
Supportive coaching environment
Coaches provide encouragement and guidance while allowing children space to try, learn and succeed independently.
Through these experiences, children develop the confidence to try, explore and participate on their own, building skills that support both movement and everyday learning.
