KINESTHETIC SENSE – The ABC’s of JuniorGym

K is for Kinesthetic Sense

Kinesthetic sense is a key part of how children learn to control their bodies.

Kinesthetic sense is the body’s ability to feel and control movement. It helps children understand how their body is moving without needing to look — allowing them to adjust, balance and move with accuracy.

In early childhood, this sense is still developing. Children build it through movement experiences that challenge their body to feel positions, control actions and respond to changes.

That’s why kinesthetic sense is an important focus in Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs — helping children become more aware, coordinated and confident in how they move.

Why Kinesthetic Sense Matters

Developing kinesthetic sense supports children in both movement and learning.

Coordination and control

Children who develop this sense are better able to coordinate their movements and control their body during activities.

Movement accuracy

Kinesthetic awareness helps children judge how much force to use, where to place their body and how to move smoothly.

Body awareness

Understanding how the body feels in different positions supports balance, posture and safe movement.

Confidence in physical activity

When children feel in control of their movements, they are more confident trying new skills and participating in activities.

How We Build Kinesthetic Sense in Junior Gym

In Junior Gym, kinesthetic sense is developed through activities that encourage children to feel and control their body in different ways.

Rolling and tumbling
These movements help children experience changes in body position and develop control through movement.

Balancing activities
Holding positions and adjusting balance helps children feel how their body responds to different challenges.

Shape holding
Practising still shapes builds awareness of body position and control.

Movement combinations
Linking movements together helps children refine how their body moves from one action to the next.

Through these experiences, children learn to feel, control and adjust their movements, building stronger coordination and confidence.
