NAVIGATION – The ABC’s of JuniorGym
N is for Navigation
Navigation is an important skill that helps children move confidently and safely through their environment.
Navigation is the ability to move safely through space and around obstacles. It involves understanding where the body is, where it needs to go, and how to get there while adjusting to changes along the way.
For young children, navigating space is a skill that develops through movement experiences. As they climb, crawl, turn and move around equipment, they learn how to judge distance, avoid obstacles and plan their movements.
That’s why navigation is an important focus in Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs — helping children build the skills they need to move safely and confidently in everyday environments and kids sports.
Why Navigation Matters
Developing navigation skills supports children in both movement and learning.
Spatial awareness
Navigation helps children understand where their body is in relation to objects, people and space around them.
Problem solving
As children move through different environments, they learn to make decisions about how to approach obstacles and challenges.
Coordination
Navigating through space requires the body to work together, improving coordination and control.
Safety and confidence
Children who can move safely around obstacles are more confident exploring playgrounds, classrooms and sports environments.
How We Build Navigation in Junior Gym
In Junior Gym, navigation is developed through fun and engaging movement challenges that encourage children to explore space.
Obstacle courses
Children move through circuits that require climbing, turning, crawling and stepping over or around equipment.
Changing pathways
Activities are designed so children move in different directions, helping them adapt and plan their movements.
Climbing and crawling challenges
These tasks encourage children to think about how to move their body through different spaces.
Guided movement experiences
Coaches support children with cues and encouragement, helping them build confidence as they navigate new challenges.
Through these experiences, children learn how to move safely, make decisions and adapt their movements, building confidence in both structured activities and everyday play.
