GROWTH MINDSET- The ABC’s of JuniorGym

G is for Growth Mindset

One of the most valuable things children can learn isn’t just how to move, it’s how to approach learning itself.

Growth mindset is the understanding that skills improve with practice, effort and perseverance. It teaches children that it’s okay not to get something right the first time, and that improvement comes from trying, learning and trying again.

In early childhood, this mindset is incredibly powerful. It shapes how children respond to challenges, how they view mistakes, and how willing they are to keep going when something feels difficult.

That’s why developing a growth mindset is an important part of Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics — helping children build not just physical skills, but confidence and resilience for life.

Why a Growth Mindset Matters

Developing a growth mindset supports children in both movement and learning.

Builds resilience

Children learn that challenges are part of the learning process, helping them bounce back and try again when something feels hard.

Encourages persistence

Instead of giving up, children begin to understand that effort leads to improvement over time.

Supports problem solving

When children are willing to keep trying, they explore different ways to approach a task and find solutions.

Creates a positive attitude toward learning

A growth mindset helps children feel proud of effort and progress, rather than focusing only on outcomes.

How We Build a Growth Mindset in Junior Gym

At Junior Gym, we intentionally create an environment where effort, persistence and progress are celebrated.

Encouraging “have-a-go” attempts
Children are supported to try new skills in a safe and positive environment, without fear of getting it wrong.

Praising effort over outcome
Our coaches focus on effort, bravery and improvement — helping children understand that trying is what matters most.

Revisiting skills over time
Children practise skills regularly, allowing them to see their own progress and build confidence as they improve.

Supportive coaching and environment
Children are encouraged to keep going, even when something feels challenging, building resilience and self-belief.

Through these experiences, children learn that progress takes time — and that they are capable of achieving more than they first thought.
