HANGING – The ABC’s of JuniorGym
H is for Hanging
Hanging is a simple but powerful movement that plays an important role in your child’s physical development.
Hanging is the ability to support the body using the arms and shoulders. Whether children are holding onto a bar, swinging on rings or climbing, they are developing the strength and control needed for many everyday tasks.
In early childhood, upper body strength is still developing, and many children don’t naturally get enough opportunities to hang, climb or support their body weight. That’s why hanging activities are an important part of Junior Gym and preschool gymnastics programs.
Why Hanging Matters
Developing hanging skills supports children in a number of important ways.
Upper body strength
Hanging helps build strength in the arms, shoulders and back, which supports many movement skills and physical activities.
Shoulder stability
Strong, stable shoulders are important for both movement and fine motor tasks, including writing, drawing and self-care activities.
Posture and body control
Hanging activates core and upper body muscles, helping children develop better posture and overall body control.
Confidence in movement
As children build strength and control, they feel more confident climbing, swinging and exploring new challenges.
How We Build Hanging skills & strength in Junior Gym
In Junior Gym, we provide safe and engaging opportunities for children to practise hanging and build upper body strength.
Rings and bars
Children learn to hold, hang and begin to support their body weight using gymnastics equipment.
Rope swings
Swinging while holding on helps children build strength while also developing coordination and confidence.
Monkey-style climbing tasks
Climbing activities encourage children to use their arms and shoulders while moving through space.
Supported progressions
Children are guided through age-appropriate activities that gradually build strength and confidence over time.
Through these experiences, children develop the strength and stability needed to support their body, improve posture and move with confidence.
