BUILDING SKILLS FOR SPORT AND LIFE

A fun, play-based, gymnastics program for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers

JuniorGym is the perfect first sports program for young children, creating opportunities to learn, explore, move and grow through purposeful play.

Designed for children aged 1 to 5 years, our age-based classes help develop confidence, coordination, balance, strength and fundamental movement skills in safe, supportive and engaging environments.

Alongside gymnastics-based movements, children practice important life skills such as listening, taking turns, following instructions and participating independently – building the foundations for lifelong learning and physical activity.

Each stage of childhood is unique, which is why children are grouped by age and developmental stage to ensure every class is appropriate, positive and rewarding.

FAQ

Have Questions About Junior Gym Classes at Skylark Sports?

What ages is JuniorGym for, and how are classes grouped?

JuniorGym is for children aged 1 to 5 years, grouped by age and developmental stage into four levels: JuniorGym 1+ (1-2 years, 30 minutes), 2+ (2-3 years), 3+ (3-4 years) and 4+ (4-5 years), each 45 minutes. Each stage of early childhood is different, so grouping this way keeps every class appropriate, positive and rewarding.

Do I do the class with my child?

In JuniorGym 1+ and 2+, yes – these are parent-assisted classes and you’re on the floor with your child. From 3+ onwards, children participate independently with their coach, which is a big part of what the program is building towards.

My child is shy and won’t leave my side. What happens in an independent class?

It’s completely normal for some children to take a little longer to settle into an independent class. Our coaches are experienced in helping children build confidence at their own pace and will never force a child to join in before they’re ready. If needed, a parent can come into the gym to help their child settle before gradually stepping back as their confidence grows. Most children become more comfortable over the first few weeks as they get to know their coach, classmates and the class routine.

Is it real gymnastics, or just play?

Both, deliberately. Everything in a JuniorGym class is purposeful – rolling, swinging, climbing, jumping, balancing and cartwheeling are real gymnastics movements, taught through play because that’s how young children learn best. Alongside the physical skills, children practise listening, taking turns, following instructions and participating independently.
